I am so beyond excited to share this!

Thank you so much Sea Legs Media for trusting my wacky last minute idea and helping me deliver my message in such a "true to me" way! You guys are the real deal!

Be sure to stick around for the bloopers at the end. I think they might be my favorite part.

Huge Thank you to Mindy and Gerry for being my poster clients! You guys are the best!

And Thank you Faith Bartruff for doing my make up and making me look fabulous, but still like me

Here are three reasons why you should hire me.

1. I can do a headstand. Don't believe me? Want me to show you?

2. I regularly wear a rubber rooster mask. If I was an animal I'd be a rooster, duh.

3. I am a lip-sync battle champion. So what if all the people who voted for me were my friends. So what if it was my birthday and they all felt like they had to, but still first place is still first place.

Alright alright, here are some actual real reasons why you should hire me.

I value MOMENTS OVER MATERIAL.

My motivation when I am photographing is to tell the story of the couple and of the family and so I'll photograph the flowers but I'll photograph them when you're holding them rather than just laying on the table. I always want there to be a heartbeat in the details rather than just the material things by themselves. The moments where they weren't posed, they weren't planned, they just happened and I caught it because I'm really valuing that part of your day. A genuine moment with always win out in my mind.

I value PLAYING OVER POSING.

Everybody no matter who they are gets nervous and awkward in front of the camera and so I give you things to do, games to play, ridiculous things to say just something to get you loose so

I value playing over posing loose so that the photographs don't look like there was a camera there, they look like you guys were just having a great time and I caught it.

I will always value PEOPLE OVER PERFECTION.

I'm much more interested in capturing a really genuine laugh than a perfectly posed stiff photograph. I'm always going to be naturally just drawn to the things that make you different than any other couple that I've photographed before. It's not necessarily about taking the most epic photo that's gonna get a billion likes and shares on Instagram. I want the photograph to mean something to the person in it and the person looking at it for years and years to come.

This is a gift to show you who you really are, how beautiful you already are. I don't need to make you look beautiful, I just need to find that beauty in you and show it. So let's photograph something that's really meaningful to you.

Bonus:

There's always got to be that person that starts the dancing that's like being ridiculous enough that everyone's like "Ok good, I'll go out there and I won't look  as bad as them. I'll be that person. I will start the party. I will bring the party.

Miles and Heather's Wedding | Robert Newell House Museum | Oregon Wedding Photographer http://www.tekoarosephoto.com/blog/2017/11/miles-and-heathers-wedding Heather and Miles met at a dance class. They fell in love and decided to get married in September. 17 years earlier, I met Heather and became fast friends as we went through a Youth with a Mission DTS and traveled to India together. Heather was a bridesmaid in my wedding 14 years ago. When she called me to tell me about Miles I couldn't have been more excited to be part of their wedding day. And when I met Miles, I could tell they had something really special.

Some of my favorite moments from their wedding day at the Robert Newell House Museum were when Heather's mom came into the getting ready room and began taking off her own earrings and jewelry to put onto Heather. Heather also wore her Great Grandmother's gloves during the ceremony, the same gloves that her great grandmother, grandmother and mother had all worn before her!

Another great moment was during the ceremony when Miles was repeating after the pastor, and when the pastor made a mistake, well Miles did as he was told and repeated the mistake too :)

And of course when it came time to toss the bouquet Heather launched that sucker into the air and it landed firmly in the branch of the tree. It had to be shaken loose and dropped into the arms of bridesmaid waiting below.

Being trusted to take photos at weddings like this is so incredibly fulfilling and I'm so very grateful for this job. It really is the best.

Not only are they so stinkin' adorable but they are full of laughter and joy and sweetness. The two lil toddlers greeted me with the biggest hellos and smiles when I first met them at Willamette Mission State Park despite having never met me before. We wandered and played and ran and explored the whole session. Here are a few of my favorites:

Win, Win, Win!

Anissa and Joe brought their adorable lil son along for their engagement session at Cathedral Park in Portland, Oregon and despite the forecast looking iffy, we didn't get rained on! We started at this cool little vintage Pizza joint in St. Johns called Signal Station Pizza and then headed to Cathedral park. So looking forward to their wedding in August!

Michelle and Ryan's Backyard Elopement | Oregon Elopement Photographer http://www.tekoarosephoto.com/blog/2017/11/michelle-and-ryans-backyard-elopement-oregon-elopement-photographer Michelle actually purchased her first date with Ryan from a fundraiser where he was auctioned off! She out bid all the other women and took him out to pizza and the rest is history. They exchanged vows in the sweetest backyard ceremony with just their family as witnesses and ate spicy tacos and snuggled with their pet rabbits. It was fabulous. I love being part of small intimate events like this.

The J Family | Salem Oregon Family Photographer http://www.tekoarosephoto.com/blog/2017/11/j-family-salem-oregon-family-photographer You know these guys. They've shown up on my blog a time or two before. This year though we included their lil rambunctious dog, Indiana in a few and well, he just did whatever he wanted to do. Which was not sit still and look my direction. Which really isn't my style anyway. My style is more about laughing and playing and being your true wild self, so Indy, you do you, man.

Julia and Brian | Rood Bridge Park | Portland, Oregon Elopement Photographer http://www.tekoarosephoto.com/blog/2017/11/julia-and-brian-rood-bridge-park-portland-oregon-elopement-photographer Sometimes weddings are big elaborate events planned for months and months in advance with a 1000 moving parts. And sometimes they're a family meeting at the park with their enthusiastic kids in tow to exchange vows. And as different as those two types of weddings are from each other, they both boil down to the same thing: the start of a marriage, a bookmark in a long developing love story, commitment and love, reverence and celebration. People doing something worthy of attention.

Julia and Brian's elopement style wedding was relaxed and fun. We met at Rood Bridge Park in Hillsboro on a sunny morning. The kids were excited and climbing on every boulder they could find as we made our way to the spot in front of the pond that Julia and Brian had scoped out for their quick and personalized ceremony. They shared tearful vows and promises, they exchanged rings and when their friend said "You may now kiss the bride!" the boys rushed in to turn the first kiss into a group hug while their daughter covered her eyes being playfully grossed out. Don't worry though, she quickly joined in on the group hug and it was one of the sweetest post kiss moments I've ever witnessed.

Elaine and Drew's Benson Hotel Wedding | Portland, Oregon Wedding Photographer http://www.tekoarosephoto.com/blog/2017/11/elaine-and-drews-benson-hotel-wedding-portland-oregon-wedding-photographer

Elaine and Drew got married at The Benson Hotel in downtown Portland, Oregon and there were so many amazing moments throughout the day. Some of my favorites were, when Elaine and Drew came back down the isle after the ceremony and Drew received like 4 high fives from the audience. And of course there's the raptor mask that kept making an appearance throughout the reception. Apparently this family has an obsession with raptors and so not only did they give me their best raptor pose as a family and bridal party, but when Drew and Elaine entered their reception and their best man was sporting the life-like Raptor mask, they lost it. Here are some of my favorites from their day!

I got to meet them there and take some quick portraits of the two of them and hear some lovely toasts. I love being part of sweet little events like this, especially at beautiful venues like Silver Falls. Here are a few of my favorites.

The V Family | Butler Creek Park | Gresham, Oregon Family Photographer http://www.tekoarosephoto.com/blog/2017/11/portland-gresham-oregon-family-photographer Meet the precious V family. When Ash Lynn first contacted me about photographing her family, she let me know that her 3 year old son has Cerebral Palsy and asked if I would be comfortable photographing him. I said OF COURSE! I knew he wouldn't be your typical kid, but every kid requires a different approach but is so worthy of the attention. It was such a pleasure to meet them and spend the lovely evening with them. Here are a few of my favorites.

Ian and Nicole | Columbia River Gorge | Portland Oregon Wedding Photographer http://www.tekoarosephoto.com/blog/2017/10/ian-and-nicole-columbia-river-gorge-portland-oregon-wedding-photographer A few months back I headed up to the Columbia River Gorge east of Portland to meet up with a hand full of other photographers. We spent the afternoon photographing Ian and Nicole(who's expecting their first child) in one of the most beautiful locations on one of the most beautiful evenings.  It's always a great experience to work with other photographers, see how they do things, teach each other new tricks and just reignite our passion and creativity. Here are some of my favorites!

Rachel and Blane's Wedding | Salem Heights Church | Salem, Oregon Wedding Photographer http://www.tekoarosephoto.com/blog/2017/10/rachel-and-blane-salem-heights-church-salem-oregon-wedding-photographer You might remember these two from their amazing Spencer Butte Engagement Session earlier this spring. Their wedding was equally amazing, full of laughter, tears, and selfie sticks. Yep, see if you can spot them :)

Some of my favorite moments were:

When Blane bravely said the Chinese phrase he had been practicing while serving Rachel's grandmother during the traditional tea ceremony and every Chinese speaker in the room cracked up laughing, including Grandma.

When they asked to have a few minutes to themselves after portraits to pray together.

When they passed up the opportunity to get food during the reception because they'd rather make sure every one of their 300 guest received a hug from them.

When Blane led everyone in a worship song during their beautiful ceremony.

When I saw more Shakas throw up in photos than I can count!

It was a true honor to be part of their wedding and to be trusted with their memories. Love you both!

Puz's Pottery | Personal Projects | Salem, Oregon Photographer http://www.tekoarosephoto.com/blog/2017/10/puz-personal-projects-salem-oregon-photographer My Grandfather is Puz. Also known as Puzzy. He's 98 years old today. Yes, Ninety Eight. He often has to pull out his drivers licence which shows his birth date in 1919 for people to believe him. As you can imagine, he's done quite a few things in his life. He has 8 children who are all grandparents now. He served in the Army during World War II. He has built sailboats, airplanes, canoes, porch swings, and countless other projects. He told me "I try something and keep playing with it till the point I know I can do it and then, whoop, time to try something else."

One such creative hobby of his is Pottery. He's been tinkering with clay for close to 50 years. He first got into pottery when one of his daughter's mother-in-law gave her a kick wheel. He looked it over and decided he could build a better one and set to work doing just that. He then got some clay and threw a few pots. He then took them down to the local art center in Hawaii where they lived at the time to see if they could fire them for him. He was told they would fire his pots but if they blew up the kiln he'd have to pay to replace it. Well, that wouldn't do so he loaded up his pots and went home and built his own kiln. This story so completely illustrates his attitude in life. Look at something, figure out how to do it, and give it a try.

I've been wanting to spend some time with him photographing his days, documenting and preserving some of his creative personality and I was able to spend a day with him while he went to the Willamette Art Center and worked on some pottery projects. It was so cool to just watch him bounce from project to project, fixing this, changing this. I hope to do this a few more times, documenting some of his other projects and hobbies.

Ben and Tai | Pringle Park Wedding | Salem Oregon Wedding Photographer http://www.tekoarosephoto.com/blog/2017/10/ben-and-tai-salem-oregon-wedding-photographer Ben and Tai had the absolute best wedding hashtag that there ever was: #benwaitingtotaitheknot   I mean, come on! So clever!

Other amazing things about them: Ben got stung by a bee in the face during the wedding reception and took it like a champ, happily carrying on. Tai carried her father's ashes in a locket around her neck so he could be with her as she walked down the isle. Ben wanted to play nothing but Beatles music during the reception. I mean, I wouldn't have complained!

They said their vows and exchanged rings with their closest family and friends at the Pringle Park Community Center in Downtown Salem on a hot July day. It was an honor to be part of their wedding day.

SeaTac Airport Layover Challenge | Personal Projects http://www.tekoarosephoto.com/blog/2017/9/seatac-airport-layover-challenge-personal-projects So, back in July I was flying home after photographing my cousin's wedding in Homer, Alaska and I ended up having a 3 hour lay-over in Seattle. I was bummed out cause I was tired and just wanted to be home already. I headed to the food court to find a place to sit down and maybe stare at my phone for a few hours. But when I sat down, I looked around and noticed that the light streaming through the windows was really beautiful. I started people watching at all the other weary travelers around me and noticed they they all had such similar looks on their faces; pure boredom. And I thought to myself "Gosh, I wish I had a happy couple to photograph in this light." and then I had an idea. One of those weird crazy ideas that you might get but then just brush off cause it's too weird and would require you to really challenge yourself. Yeah, one of those. But instead of brushing it off, I decided to do it. My idea was to ask some of these bored out of their mind people to model for me. To approach these complete strangers, with my camera and ask if they'd let me take their photos. I figured, I've got three hours to kill, what's the worse thing they could say?  No? Well, that wouldn't be so bad and then I'd at least have tried this idea.

So I got my camera out, looked around and started asking people if they'd help me with a personal photography project. And out of the 10 different people I asked, 6 agreed. Some of them gave me their email addresses so I could send them the photos after, others just hurried on to their connecting flight, but a few stayed and chatted with me and before I knew it, my layover was over and I was genuinely sad that I had to stop talking to strangers.

Yes, for the most part it was awkward. But for me that was the challenge, to see if I could get these people who I didn't know, who were likely tired and somewhat stressed and in a very public and non-romantic environment to connect with me and with each other very quickly. These photos aren't going to win any awards, but they represent something to me, that with just a little interest and attention, people open up to you and what you see is worthy of attention. I'm proud of myself for not brushing off the idea and for stepping out and trying something. I can honestly say I'm hoping for another long lay-over so I can try this again.

Mindy and Gerry | Reed Opera House Wedding |Salem, Oregon Wedding Photographer http://www.tekoarosephoto.com/blog/2017/8/mindy-and-gerry-reed-opera-house-wedding-salem-oregon-wedding-photographer Mindy and Gerry filled the Reed Opera House with balloons and hung photographs from each string so they would be floating through their memories at their wedding. It was amazing and such a cool way to honor the paths that had brought them to that day and all the supportive friends, adventures and stories they'd collected along the way. They wanted to celebrate all of that while they committed to each other and the next adventure. A few of my favorite moments were when Mindy's 6 year old son saw her for the first time in her dress and declared loudly "Mom! You look gorgeous!" and when Mindy was trying to put Gerry's ring on his finger during the ceremony but it wasn't fitting so she licked his finger so it would slide on better! And of course during the reception when Mindy and Gerry gave toast in the style of "Thank You" notes from The Tonight Show complete with the "thank you note writing music".  Clients like this make my job so incredibly rewarding.
